Overview
Erectile dysfunction, often called impotence, is the inability to
have an erection. Occasional failure to have an erection is normal
and happens to almost every man at some point of his life. But when
a man is unable to have an erection adequate for intercourse more
than one forth of attempts, it is considered as impotence.
Impotence usually occurs when the penis is deprived of oxygen-rich
blood. There is also evidence that when the oxygen levels to the
penis are low, then it will result in forming hard, structural tissue,
including scar tissue. There are a number of conditions that can
deprive the penis of oxygen-rich blood. Ischemia is the primary
cause of oxygen deprivation. Ischemia is the blockage of blood vessels.
Unhealthy cholesterol levels are also able to cause the blockage
in the blood vessels, which lead to heart problems that may also
contribute to erectile dysfunction. In addition, when cholesterol
and other factors are imbalanced, a fatty substance called plaque
forms on the artery walls. As the plaque continues to build up the
arterial walls then slowly constrict, which in effect reduces the
blood flow. This is a process known as atherosclerosis and it is
a major contributor to the development of coronary heart disease.
It may also play a role in the development of erectile dysfunction.
Infrequent erections are also able to deprive the penis of oxygen.
Without having daily erections, the collagen production will increase
and will also eventually form a tough tissue that interferes with
blood flow. The spontaneous erections men experience while sleeping
or during the day may be a natural protection against this process.
Studies also indicate that regular bicycling may pose a risk for
erectile dysfunction by reducing blood flow to the penis.
