MSG: Pleasure or Pain?

MSG stands for Monosodium Glutamate.  It is a flavor enhancer that has been used effectively to bring out the best taste in foods, emphasizing natural flavors.  It simply makes good food taste better.  Therefore many restaurants as well as common households are using MSG more frequently and in greater amounts.  This can lead to health problems, however.  Many people are developing something called the “MSG Syndrome” from the over-ingestion of MSG.

Symptoms of the “MSG Syndrome” may include burning, chest pain, numbness, rapid heartbeat, headache, nausea, drowsiness, and weakness.

Older people are particularly susceptible. Many elderly people suffer from depressions and balance difficulties caused by MSG. There are links, as well, to Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) designates MSG as safe with common ingredients such as salt and baking powder and requires the presence of MSG in foods be indicated.  However, recent studies suggest a connection between MSG and MSG-containing substances and the dramatic rise in cases of asthma, migraine, Parkinson's Disease, heartbeat irregularities, and a host of other serious illnesses.
